Medical Director

Dr. Somaio brings 16 years of experience as a board certified physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR).

Dr. Somaio brings 16 years of experience as a board certified physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). He completed his medical training and residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Upstate New York. He has extensive experience treating both adult and pediatric patients with stroke, brain injury, trauma, orthopedic and neurologic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. He was an associate professor at Albany Medical Center Hospital for PMR residents and is an auxiliary member of the New York State Board of Medicine. He served as President of the Stand Up and Play Foundation (Capital District of NY Chapter) and is currently an active member of the National MS Society.

Business Development Director

Renee Bannon joined Encompass Health with the opening of the Bluffton hospital in 2018 and now serves as the business development director. 

Renee Bannon joined Encompass Health with the opening of the Bluffton hospital in 2018 and now serves as the business development director. She came with 20+ combined years of sales, business, and nursing experience. Renee earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from The Baptist School of Health Professionals and is licensed as a registered nurse. Renee is a native to the area and comes from a family of nurses, first responders, military, and community servants. She proudly boasts that her grandmother, also a nurse, helped establish the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Jasper County.

For 13 years leading up to his current role, he served as a regional director of a large outpatient orthopedic practice in New Jersey.

Ryan serves as the director of therapy operations at Encompass Health Bluffton. For 13 years leading up to his current role, he served as a regional director of a large outpatient orthopedic practice in New Jersey. In addition, he has experience in acute care, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient clinics.  Ryan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Stockton University in New Jersey. As an experienced and engaged physical therapist, Ryan understands the needs of patients and is dedicated to achieving exceptional patient outcomes.

Josh graduated from Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy in 2016.

Josh graduated from Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy in 2016. Prior to pharmacy school, he earned a sociology degree from Presbyterian College. Josh joins us from the Encompass Health hospital in Anderson, South Carolina. He also serves as the antibiotic stewardship coordinator since receiving his SIDP Antimicrobial Stewardship Certificate in 2017. Currently Josh is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration with a healthcare administration focus from Wesleyan University.

Brandon Messer

Director of Quality and Risk Management

Brandon Messer assumed the director of quality and risk management role in January 2019.

Brandon Messer assumed the director of quality and risk management role in January 2019. Prior to joining Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital, he served as the director of quality management at a long-term acute care hospital in Savannah, Georgia. He also has experience as a respiratory therapy and laboratory manager. Brandon graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University with a bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy. He became a Registered Respiratory Therapist in 2013 and has been an Emergency Medical Technician since 2009. He is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and the American Association for Respiratory Care. In addition, Brandon serves as a Healthcare Specialist in the United States Army Reserve.

Jason studied kinesiology and exercise physiology at Indiana University in Bloomington. He and his family relocated from Denver, Colorado to be closer to family that live on Hilton Head Island and Savannah.

Edward has worked and held several healthcare financial roles in his career. His leadership and experience as CFO and VP assist the hospital in its mission to provide exceptional patient care in the greater Bluffton/Hilton Head market. Ed has degrees from the University of Tennessee and Tennessee Technological University. He is responsible for the financial, purchasing, cost containment and overall metric and performance goals of the hospital. Motivated by the passion to make a positive impact, his favorite experiences are seeing the amazing changes taking place in the lives and families of our patients.

Laurette has worked in a variety of settings as a registered nurse case manager for over 15 years. She holds certification in case management for CCMC and ANCC. Her background includes acute care, med-surg, hospice, and rehabilitative nursing. Laurette is a graduate of St. Petersburg College in Tampa, FL, with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a native Texan, and currently resides in Richmond Hills, GA. Laurette is passionate about providing high-quality care for her patients, and achieving the best outcomes.
