Chief Executive Officer
Michele has 40 years of nursing and patient care services management experience. She became chief executive officer for Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Charleston in 2017. She has a long tenure with Encompass Health working at Encompass Health Florence and AnMed Health in Anderson before returning to Charleston. She received her nursing diploma from St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. She also received a degree in ministry training from The University of the South School of Theology, as well as a healthcare management certification from Lander University in South Carolina.
Program Director of Neurorehabilitation
Dr. Salerno is the program director of neurorehabilitation at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Charleston. She joins the Encompass Health team from UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Salerno was a special education teacher before earning her M.D. at UAB School of Medicine. Following medical school, she completed six years of general surgery residency at the University of Virginia, and earned a master's degree in clinical research during that time. Dr. Salerno pursued an additional residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at UAB. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Director of Quality and Risk Management
Lakisha is a registered nurse and has served in multiple leadership roles since joining Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Charleston in 2008. Her devotion to customer satisfaction and process improvement has led her to her current role as director of quality/risk management, which she assumed in 2017. She leads the fall prevention efforts and is a nationally recognized presenter on the topic. Prior to Encompass Health Charleston, she was an emergency department nurse at Summerville Medical Center and a telemetry unit nurse at Cleveland Clinic. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Walden University and is a Certified Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN). Lakisha volunteers as a triage nurse at the Medical Outreach Clinic of Summerville.
Director of Case Management
Janina is a licensed clinical social worker with experience in the areas of healthcare, child welfare and behavioral health. Her passion for advocacy has enabled her to work with diverse client populations in various cities on the United States East Coast. She has more than 10 years of experience in healthcare and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park as well as a master’s degree in social work from Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work. Janina, her husband and daughter are actively involved in community outreach through the local church that her husband pastors. A native New Yorker, she is a loyal Yankees fan and remains neutral in South Carolina’s Tigers-Gamecock rivalry.
Tricia currently serves as controller at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Charleston, formerly HealthSouth. Tricia’s career spans over 25 years of progressive and accomplished home health and hospital CFO experience. She received her master’s degree in business administration from North Greenville University in her hometown of Greenville, SC.
Program Director of Medical Services
Dr. Patel is a 2003 graduate of University of Pikeville School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Patel became board certified in 2006 by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has been serving the Charleston area since 2006. Dr. Patel is president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, Lowcountry chapter. In 2011, he founded Pinnacle Physicians, LLC, a hospitalist company with a mission to provide the highest quality of care for inpatient services.

Business Development Director
Shelia has a bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy and is a graduate of Indiana University. With more than 25 years in healthcare, she has a diverse background with a special love for rehabilitation.
Director of Pharmacy Operations
Cathy has been the pharmacy director at Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, since 2007. She has more than 14 years of pharmacy management experience. She received her BS in pharmacy from The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Pharmacy. She also has a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston in secondary education and taught history, geography, journalism and English before seeking her degree in pharmacy. Cathy instructs pharmacy students from South Carolina College of Pharmacy where she is an adjunct assistant professor. She has lived in the Charleston area for more than 30 years.
Human Resources Director
Susan has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare human resources management. She enjoys spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Susan is also involved with missions through her church.
Program Director of Neuroscience Services
Dr. Walker is the program director of neuroscience services at Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, Charleston. She joins the Encompass Health Charleston team from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she resided as an associate professor and residency program director for the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Walker completed medical school at the University of Kentucky and served as the administrative chief resident during her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in spinal cord injury at the renowned Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. She is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and brain injury medicine.
Director of Therapy Operations
Christy Yatagan graduated from West Virginia University with a doctorate degree in physical therapy in 2009 and a bachelor's in exercise physiology in 2006. She has been a PT with Encompass Health for over ten years and was named DTO in 2018 after serving as a team leader and a department manager. Christy has 96 hours of specialized neuro IFRAH training but enjoys working with all patient populations. Christy previously led the hospital's team to maintain our Joint Commission Hip Fracture Management certification.
