Recovering COVID-19 patient loses wife during his own battle and remains determined to return home

Gregorio Chavez’s determination to beat COVID-19 and return home to his four children was fueled by the memory of his wife, who lost her battle to COVID-19 while Chavez was being treated in the hospital.

He got out of the car to change the tire and the next thing he knew, he had been hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Charles and Nellie Anness have been married for 71 years. They met at a high school baseball game and were married on Sept. 3, 1949. They had a daughter together and adopted two boys. On a recent trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the couple contracted COVID-19 while attending a church service.
