To Celebrate Black History Month our Diversity and Inclusion team created this great bulletin board celebrating the accomplishments of Black individuals in the medical field. We thank them for all the work they put into this project. One of the many individuals we highlighted is Goldie Brangman. Ms. Brangman was a part of the emergency surgical team at Harlem Hospital that performed a successful emergency heart surgery on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after he was stabbed during an assassination attempt in 1958. She went on to have an illustrious career in the field of medicine.

For Heart Month, we wanted to highlight Donald Stephens, who is recovering from heart surgery. After undergoing an extensive cardiac procedure he came to our hospital for cardiac rehabilitation. A significant accomplishment for Mr. Stephens is quitting smoking. He has tried throughout the years, and he is now three weeks without a cigarette! He said the best thing about being at Encompass Health was the communication from his team. "I knew what to expect and when to expect it. It was very comforting, and it was doable.”

Our staff had a blast celebrating National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. We raffled away some great “staycation” prizes and got creative with some outdoor arts and crafts. We love our patients; we love our staff, and we love having fun!

Hospital happenings

This week at Valley of the Sun we are celebrating National Rehabilitation Awareness Week by giving back to our community with a blood drive. We partnered with Vitalant and filled 25 slots to donate blood today! In order to ensure that everyone stayed healthy both before and after the blood drive we offered a hydration station on Monday and Tuesday to all staff, and we had a trail mix bar today for all staff to enjoy! Stay tuned for more fun events and activities this week.
