Bartell will serve as CEO of hospitals in Birmingham and Pelham, Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 20, 2022– Michael Bartell has been appointed as area chief executive officer within Encompass Health’s South Central Region. In his position as area CEO, Bartell will oversee all of the day-to-day operations and patient care and quality at two Alabama hospitals – Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Lakeshore in Birmingham and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County in Pelham. He assumed the position on November 7, 2021.

Bartell has served in hospital leadership roles at Encompass Health for more than eight years. He first joined Encompass Health in 2014 as associate administrator of the Sarasota hospital before serving as CEO of Regional Rehabilitation Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama, and most recently served as CEO of Encompass Health of Lakeshore since 2018. The hospital has made significant advancements under his leadership, including completing a $30M hospital renovation and expansion project, reducing labor costs and expanding patient volume, and improving clinical outcomes. Prior to joining Encompass Health, Bartell served in leadership roles at various hospitals, health systems and medical groups in California.

Bartell served in the United States Coast Guard for four and a half years. He completed his bachelor’s degree in health science at Fresno Pacific University and his master’s degree in health administration from Loma Linda University. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives since 2003 and has served on the Board of the Business Council of Alabama since 2018.
