July 1, 2026MUSC Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health, has unveiled a newly renovated therapy gym designed to enhance patient care and improve rehabilitation outcomes.

The renovation repurposes previously unused areas of the hospital — an inactive pool, locker room and mechanical spaces — into a modern, fully equipped therapy environment. The redesign expands the hospital's therapy gym and introduces new, specialized equipment and treatment areas to better meet patients' needs.

The renovated space now includes a spacious main therapy gym, a quiet therapy room, updated speech therapy offices, a dedicated charting room and supply areas. A key feature of the project is the addition of an activities of daily living (ADL) suite, complete with a full kitchen and bathroom, allowing patients to practice real-world tasks in a safe, supervised setting.

The hospital also added new technology, including an overhead Bioness Vector system, bariatric-friendly equipment such as functional mat tables and parallel bars, and interactive therapy screens for neurological rehabilitation. These additions complement existing tools to enhance safety during therapy and provide additional support for therapists.

“We are entering into a new rehabilitation environment where the skills of our therapists, in combination with this advanced equipment, will lead patients to improved outcomes,” said Greg Halbart, director of therapy operations. “Patients will have greater confidence in their abilities, safer opportunities for early intervention and improved methods for mobility that were not possible before.”

The new ADL suite is designed to simulate everyday home environments, helping patients prepare for life after discharge.

“Our main goal is to help patients and families succeed at home,” Halbart said. “This suite allows therapists to recreate realistic activities and tailor treatment plans in a way that is both progressive and safe.”

The integration of advanced technology also allows therapists to deliver more efficient care. Equipment such as the overhead vector system supports patients during movement exercises, including standing, walking and even jogging, while automatically assisting if balance is lost.

“Previously, some activities required the hands-on support of multiple therapists,” Halbart said. “Now, the technology allows one therapist to focus more closely on the patient's specific needs while maintaining a safe environment.”

The renovation not only enhances patient safety but also empowers therapists to take a more creative, individualized approach to care.

“This space truly reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence in rehabilitation,” Halbart added. “We are proud to bring these advancements to our community and provide patients with the best tools possible so they can regain independence and continue their recovery.”
