What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy, also known as OT, is a form of rehabilitation that helps you rebuild the skills you need for everyday activities after a life-changing illness or injury. From getting dressed and bathing to preparing meals and hobbies, the goal is to help you or your loved one live as independently as possible.
Inpatient rehabilitation is often the next step for people who need more support after a hospital stay. You’ll receive at least three hours of therapy a day, five days a week, with sessions spaced throughout the day to balance progress with rest and recovery.
Who can benefit from occupational therapy?
Inpatient occupational therapy helps patients who need support to regain independence after a complex illness, injury or surgery. We support a wide range of conditions, customizing therapy plans to meet you where you are in your recovery.

What to expect during inpatient occupational therapy
Inpatient occupational therapy uses hands-on sessions to practice real-life tasks and build the skills needed to return to your community with confidence.
Your occupational therapy could include:
- Dressing, bathing and other personal care
- Preparing and eating meals
- Managing daily tasks at home
- Safe transfers for showers and toilets
- Returning to hobbies and activities you enjoy
- Practicing skills needed for community outings
Occupational therapy also addresses challenges like balance, coordination, one-sided weakness, cognitive skills and fine motor function.
