Encompass Health Irmo shares stroke warning signs, preventative measures

Stroke Signs and Symptoms - WACH FOX 57

May 18, 2026 — Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the U.S., according to the American Stroke Association. In an interview with FOX 57, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Irmo, a leading provider of stroke rehabilitation, discussed stroke warning signs and ways to prevent stroke.

“Several risk factors go into stroke,” said Dr. Danny Westerkam, the hospital's medical director. “One is hypertension. You have to watch your blood pressure. The other is tobacco use, cholesterol, alcohol use, obesity and diabetes. Those are the main risk factors.”

Westerkam said exercise is important for good health and recommends 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week. He cautioned that even with exercise, other factors can still lead to stroke.

“Hypertension is probably the number one,” he said. “A lot of people don't realize they have high blood pressure, so it's very important to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis.”

Westerkam also offered the B.E.F.A.S.T. acronym to know when a stroke is happening. The acronym stands for balance is off, eye (vision) changes, face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty and time to call 911.

“Time is so important,” Westerkam said. “Time is of the essence.”

Minutes matter. Seeking medical attention quickly can save your life and lead to a stronger recovery.

“Rehabilitation is a crucial part of recovering from a stroke,” Westerkam said. “I highly recommend rehabilitation — physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech — but also taking good care of your health. So, watching your blood pressure, watching your cholesterol, exercising on a regular basis. All those things are important.”
