June 8, 2026 — Encompass Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Elissa “Lisa” Charbonneau has been named to Modern Healthcare's 2026 list of 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives. The list recognizes clinical leaders whose expertise and leadership are shaping care delivery, organizational performance and the future of healthcare.
Charbonneau is among a select group of physicians and nurses nationwide recognized for driving measurable clinical, operational and financial performance while addressing industrywide challenges and advancing patient care. This annual honor highlights licensed clinicians who hold senior executive roles and use their medical expertise to guide strategy and transformation across the healthcare industry.

Charbonneau has served as Encompass Health's chief medical officer since 2015, following her role as vice president of medical services. A board-certified physiatrist, she brings decades of clinical and leadership experience to the role, including prior service as medical director of New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland and head of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Maine Medical Center. Prior to joining Encompass Health's executive team, she spent more than a decade supporting the Company through its physician advisory board and clinical committees.
Over the past year, Charbonneau has led initiatives that advanced clinical quality, patient safety and outcomes across Encompass Health's nationwide network. Her leadership has supported reductions in patient falls, improved identification of patients at risk for acute-care transfers, strengthened discharge planning to help more patients safely return to the community, and expanded professional development and engagement for clinicians across disciplines.
In addition to her work at Encompass Health, Charbonneau plays an active role in shaping national healthcare standards. She serves on Joint Commission's Chief Medical Officer Council and the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee and frequently presents nationally on rehabilitation care delivery, physician leadership and patient outcomes.
