May 11, 2026 — Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Florence recognized American Stroke Month Saturday with a community Stroke Awareness Field Day. The event included local healthcare providers, survivors and caregivers.
The event featured stations staffed by Encompass Health Florence employees and local medical professionals who shared information on stroke prevention, warning signs and long-term recovery resources. Attendees received free blood pressure screenings along with guidance on medication management and nutrition — two key factors in reducing stroke risk.
“Our hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach to stroke rehabilitation, involving constant collaboration to provide consistent care during a patient's stay,” said John Jones, CEO of Encompass Health Florence. “Every stroke recovery is unique, and a variety of approaches, including medication management and nutrition, can support improved outcomes.”
Therapy teams offered hands-on demonstrations, allowing participants to experience therapy simulations led by physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. The activities gave attendees a better understanding of what to expect during stroke rehabilitation.
“In addition to the demonstrations and simulations we showed today, we offer a variety of resources for people who have experienced stroke and their caregivers,” Jones said.
Encompass Health Florence understands recovery extends beyond inpatient care. The hospital invited representatives from home health agencies, prosthetic and orthotic centers and assisted living facilities to share additional resources with attendees.
“Events like this allow our healthcare community to come together to support stroke survivors and their caregivers,” Jones said. “Our teams had meaningful conversations about the signs and symptoms of stroke and the importance of early intervention.”
The event emphasized the hospital's commitment to community education and its belief that awareness and early intervention remain essential in improving outcomes for stroke survivors.
