March 18, 2026Rehabilitation Hospital of Athens marked its first year of service in March, treating nearly 600 patients from the Athens-Clarke County area during its inaugural year. The hospital kicked off the anniversary celebration with a team lunch, words from the CEO and a visit from a former patient and their caregiver.

Since opening in March 2025, the hospital has provided inpatient rehabilitation care for individuals recovering from conditions including brain injuries, strokes and hip fractures. Patients are supported by a multidisciplinary care team that includes occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, physicians, dietitians and other clinical and support staff.

“The impact we have made in a year is outstanding,” said Loretta Rice, CEO of Rehabilitation Hospital of Athens. “It is clear our community needed access to this level of rehabilitation care, and I am grateful to serve patients and families in this wonderful community.”

The hospital employs more than 180 team members, contributing to the area’s healthcare workforce while expanding access to specialized rehabilitative services close to home.

During its first year of operation, Rehabilitation Hospital of Athens also reported some of the highest patient satisfaction scores in its region. The hospital was also named a finalist in the Athens Community’s Choice Awards in the Hospital/Medical Center category.

“Since we opened, we have seen hundreds of people regain independence after experiencing a life-changing illness or injury,” Rice said. “I am excited to see how our hospital continues to grow and serve the community in the years ahead.”

Rehabilitation Hospital of Athens, a joint venture hospital between Encompass Health and Piedmont, provides essential rehabilitative services that help patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions regain function and independence.
