New technology improves rehabilitation and recovery for patients

Patient and clinician walk in rehabilitation hallway using Bioness L300 system on lower leg, supporting functional electrical stimulation to improve gait and mobility after stroke

June 29, 2026West Tennessee Healthcare Rehabilitation Hospital Cane Creek, a partnership with Encompass Health, has expanded its therapy technology with the addition of the Bioness L300, a functional electrical stimulation (FES) system designed to improve mobility for patients experiencing foot drop or knee instability.

“The Bioness L300 allows us to better support stroke survivors, individuals with neurological conditions that affect knee stability and patients recovering from orthopedic injuries,” said Director of Therapy Operations Brandon Wilson. “Its ability to help re-strengthen the quadriceps and improve gait mechanics makes it a valuable tool in our rehabilitation programs.”

The Bioness L300 uses targeted electrical stimulation to re-educate the lower leg muscles, helping patients regain more natural and controlled movement during walking. A built-in motion sensor detects gait patterns in real time, allowing patients to walk more confidently across different surfaces and at varying speeds.

Clinical studies have shown that FES technology can help reduce fall risk, improve gait quality, increase range of motion and support muscle activation — all critical components of safe and effective rehabilitation.

“At Cane Creek, we are committed to staying at the forefront of modern rehabilitation technology,” Wilson said. “As a hospital certified in stroke recovery, the Bioness L300 is an added bonus to our toolkit to further push for patient excellence.”
