Therapy dog supports rehabilitation efforts

Feb. 25, 2026 — At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Daytona Beach, one team member has become impossible to miss. Theodore, a 5-year-old golden retriever and certified therapy dog, has been part of the hospital community since the hospital opened in July 2025.

“Theodore has truly become our mascot,” said Kaytelynne Dubey, director of therapy operations. “He's one of the most loved members of our team.”

Affectionately known as Theo, his presence has boosted engagement, encouraged participation in therapy and reduced anxiety among patients. Theo joins staff for patient rounding and participates in therapy sessions. He allows patients to practice pet care tasks or work on mobility and coordination by playing with him. During group therapy, Theo often leans gently against patients, offering comfort and grounding during challenging exercises.

“Theo visits the hospital two to three times a week,” Dubey said. “Our patients and staff look for Theo with anticipation every day.”

Theo's impact extends beyond emotional support. Research shows that interaction with therapy dogs can help lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate and decrease perceived pain.

“We feel privileged to share him with our patients,” Dubey said. “He has a special way of brightening the hardest days.”

Theo has been a certified therapy dog since 2022. He also completed 12 weeks of training at the Orlando Dog Training Club. When he isn't visiting patients at Encompass Health Daytona Beach, he is bringing joy to patients in other health care settings.
