March 24, 2026 — Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Greenville is halfway to the finish line of a major hospital expansion. The inpatient rehabilitation hospital is doubling in size from 40 private patient beds to 80. Hospital CEO Joshua Trout said expanding the hospital is essential to meet the growing healthcare needs of the area.
“Greenville County’s population has increased 8.6% from 2020 to 2024, with projections showing growth to 575,000 residents by 2026, reflecting one of the strongest growth patterns in the state,” Trout said. “This expansion is especially critical given the area’s aging demographic, with 17.4% of Greenville County residents now age 65 or older and more than 91,000 seniors living in the area.”
The senior adult population is the primary patient population served by Encompass Health Greenville. It’s this age group, which has significantly higher rehabilitation needs following medical events such as strokes, orthopedic surgeries or complex illnesses, that will quickly see the benefit of the expansion.
“By doubling to 80 beds, we can not only meet the growing needs of our community but also strengthen our partnerships with local acute care hospitals by helping offload patients who require rehabilitation services,” Trout said. “This frees up their beds more quickly, improves patient flow and enables individuals to return to the community faster with the appropriate level of rehabilitative support.”
The hospital’s expansion will also create approximately 80 to 90 additional jobs. However, it’s the excitement of the hospital’s current team that is helping drive momentum.
“The collective enthusiasm — from our team, our partners and the community — continues to reinforce our mission and energize our staff as we grow to meet the needs of those we serve,” Trout said.
The project is expected to be completed in September 2026. The hospital will open the new patient rooms in early October. The addition also includes four dayrooms, one nurse station, a new family courtyard with walking paths and benches, as well as an expansion of the existing therapy gym and enhancements to the existing therapy courtyard. The therapy courtyard will be outfitted with a therapy pavilion, sunshades and walking paths with therapy surfaces.
