Catherine Perry, Daisy Award winner, shares story with WBRC FOX 6
Oct. 16, 2025 - Catherine Perry, a nurse with Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Lakeshore located in Birmingham, Alabama, is using her DAISY Award recognition to raise awareness for heart health and encourage others going through personal struggles. Over the past year, Perry has experienced her own health issues and lost her 29-year-old son.
“My son told me one day he was having a headache,” Perry told WBRC FOX 6 News. “I never thought it was related to his heart.”
Perry's son celebrated his 29th birthday and a few days later, he passed away from a heart attack. Perry was working at Encompass Health Lakeshore when she received the devastating phone call. However, her personal struggles didn't end there. A few months later, she was back at work when she started experiencing an excruciating headache and her face going numb.
“When I was having that headache, I knew something was wrong,” said Perry.
Perry suffered a stroke. After her recovery, she returned to Encompass Health Lakeshore. In August 2025, she was presented with the DAISY Award, a national award recognizing nurses who go above and beyond to care for patients and show compassion.
“[This award] made me want to keep going, keep moving and keep doing what I do,” said Perry. “Loving my patients and being there for everyone who has been there for me.”
She also takes any opportunity to educate on heart health.
“[My son] didn't know he had heart problems,” said Perry. “I want to educate people, and let them know signs and symptoms to look for.”
Perry says to listen to your body, and if you are experiencing shortness of breath or chest pain, to consult a physician immediately.
As for the future, Perry plans to advance her nursing career. She is currently pursuing a nurse practitioner degree.
