Nov. 28, 2025 - Plymouth Police Chief Alex Hutchins suffered a massive stroke at his home in August. Hutchins, only 45-years-old, spent several weeks in an intensive care unit before arriving at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Concord. After months of intense inpatient rehabilitation and just two days before Thanksgiving, he was able to return home to his wife and two sons.
“I'm excited to go home to my kids, but I'm also nervous to leave,” Hutchins told the New Hampshire Union Leader.
At Encompass Health Concord, Hutchins learned to walk again and spent time with a speech therapist. Hospital Medical Director Jeremy Collins described Hutchins' stroke as “devastating,” initially causing anxiety. Hutchins became determined, though, to regain strength and work towards recovery.
“Every day he would say, 'I am going to do a little bit better,'” Collins told the newspaper.
Collins emphasized time is of the essence when it comes to receiving treatment for strokes.
“There is a window of three hours,” the doctor said. “You've got to get to the emergency room within that window.”
