March 22, 2026 — When Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Rock Hill opened 25 years ago, it began as a 40-bed hospital focused on helping patients regain independence after life-altering medical events. A quarter of a century later, the hospital marked that milestone with a full campus refresh, allowing it to expand its services and continue providing high-quality care for Rock Hill and York counties.
“Our hospital is known for specialized inpatient rehabilitation, especially stroke rehabilitation,” said Michelle Von Arx, CEO of Encompass Health Rock Hill. “Our legacy is defined by advancing rehabilitation care for this region and being part of the national Encompass Health footprint.”
The hospital's interdisciplinary team includes physical, occupational and speech therapists, physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and case managers who work together on individualized recovery plans. It also earned a designated stroke certification from the Joint Commission, a recognition that strengthened its clinical reputation and referral relationships.
The renovation was completed in phases over the past year with the goal of ensuring the hospital's physical environment matched the quality of care delivered. During construction, the hospital operated with 40 beds, reopening with 50 beds once the project was complete.
“Renovating our hospital ensures that our facilities match the quality care that we provide,” Von Arx said. “It improves the patient experience, supports our clinical teams and allows us to continue serving our community with innovative, safe and effective health care.”
The refresh included new flooring, carpeting, wallpaper, paint and ceilings throughout the building. Patient rooms and staff offices received new furniture, and common areas — including the cafeteria, day room and conference rooms — were updated. Additional office space was added to support staff.
The project also introduced a new therapy courtyard, designed to help patients practice navigating real-world environments. The outdoor space now includes a ramp, stairs and multiple walking surfaces, along with areas for patients and families to gather.
“With the refresh, we added to our mobility courtyard to make it more functional,” said Trevor Hudson, therapy manager. “I know this area will be a favorite treatment spot for our patients and therapists.”
Local artwork featuring scenes from Rock Hill and surrounding communities was installed throughout the hospital to help strengthen the community connection. Hudson said the updated look now matches the level of care the team provides, creating a strong first impression for patients and visitors. He said the interior updates have also made a noticeable impact on the patient experience.
“The refresh made our hospital brighter, and it's refreshing walking down the hall each day to see the bright lights and vibrant pictures of Rock Hill,” he said. “I've seen patients stop at a picture and share a story about the buildings. That small touch really reconnected our hospital with the community.”
As the hospital looks ahead, Von Arx said the refresh positions Encompass Health Rock Hill to continue meeting the needs of a growing community.
