Sept. 1, 2026 – For registered nurse Zenab Kone, compassionate care is more than a professional responsibility. It is the foundation of her work at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Salisbury. Kone’s commitment to supporting patients through some of life's most challenging moments recently earned her The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a national recognition honoring nurses who make a profound impact on the lives of their patients and families.

Kone's journey into nursing began with a desire to make a difference when people need it most. She started her career as a licensed practical nurse before becoming a registered nurse.

“After 15 years as a registered nurse, I have continued to grow in my passion for this profession,” Kone said. “Working for Encompass Health Salisbury has shown me the incredible strength and resilience of my patients. Being able to walk alongside patients during their recovery, celebrate their progress, and remind them of how far they’ve come is one of the greatest privileges of being a nurse.”

Patients and colleagues praise Kone for the kindness and enthusiasm she brings to every interaction. Whether listening to concerns, celebrating milestones or offering reassurance during difficult days, she strives to make each patient feel valued and supported.

“I believe compassion begins with truly seeing each patient as a person, not just a diagnosis,” Kone said. “I take the time to listen, learn about their concerns and understand what matters most to them. A kind word, a smile, a moment of encouragement or simply being present can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.”

For Kone, rehabilitation nursing is about helping patients recognize their own progress, especially during times of uncertainty.

“Many patients are facing major life changes and uncertainty,” she said. “I try to bring positivity by reminding them of their progress, celebrating even the small victories and encouraging them when things feel difficult. My goal is for every patient to feel respected, supported and confident that they are not alone on their journey.”

The DAISY Award is part of a nationwide program established by The DAISY Foundation to recognize clinical excellence, compassion and dedication nurses demonstrate every day.
