Texas Tech police officer discharges from South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital

July 14, 2025 – Texas Tech University police officer James Black recovered at South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital following a June 24 campus shooting. According to Texas Tech University Police Department, Black was struck by gunfire and the suspect’s vehicle.

“It was an honor providing care for Officer Black,” said Beth Tucker, chief executive officer of South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital. “As with all our patients, our team was dedicated to his recovery and making sure he can return to the Texas Tech campus. We are grateful for his service and glad to be a part of his recovery journey.”
