At Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. We serve the Boise area as a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

Chief Executive Officer
Renee Hinson serves as CEO of Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, bringing more than 25 years of experience as an occupational therapist and leader in the healthcare field to her role. She has been a member of the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center team since 2016, first as the interim consultative director of inpatient rehabilitation and then as the hospital’s administrative director. Prior to her time with Saint Alphonsus, she served in many leadership roles, starting as a senior occupational therapist then moving into the director of inpatient rehabilitation services position at Holy Cross Hospital. Renee received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from the University of Richmond, and later obtained her master’s in occupational therapy from the Medical College of Virginia. In addition, she holds a master’s degree in business administration. She is certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt and also by the National Board Certification for Occupational Therapy. She is a member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality, the National and State Occupational Therapy Associations and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Medical Director
Dr. David Wald has practiced medicine for 18 years. He served as medical director for ten years at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL which was recognized for best practices in inpatient rehabilitation. He has presented at national and regional conferences for AMRPA and UDS. He is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, completing his residency at Emory University School of Medicine and his medical degree at New York Medical College.
Chief Nursing Officer
Tonya Kardas is the chief nursing officer of Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. Tonya is an oncology nurse by background and has been working primarily in nursing administration for the past seven years, where she had the opportunity to become a part of the Saint Alphonsus rehabilitation family. She appreciates the opportunity to partner with colleagues as they work together with patients and families, navigating their path to recovery and healing.
Director of Case Management
Medenne brings more than 17 years of nursing experience. Eleven of those years were in various case management roles both on complex medical telemetry units and in case management leadership. Prior to her employment with Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, she was employed by St. Luke’s Health System in Boise, Idaho as the manager of case management. Medenne received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Boise State University and has achieved her Case Management Certification from CCMC.
Controller
Paul joined the Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital leadership team after working in the healthcare industry since 2016. He graduated from Brigham Young University-Idaho with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in business management-finance. Paul graduated from Air Force Basic Military Training with honors and currently serves in the Idaho Air National Guard.
Business Development Director
Sarah is a registered nurse with 10 years of rehabilitation experience both at subacute and acute facilities. She is board certified with a CRRN and has worked as a clinical liaison for two separate companies. She was the No. 1 performing clinical liaison in the country for over six months. Before joining Encompass Health, she was promoted to regional director of business development while working for her previous company. She was born and raised in Idaho and has been in the Treasure Valley since 1993.
Director of Quality and Risk Management
Megan has more than 20 years of experience in rehabilitation at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing at Boise State University and a master's degree in business administration, health care management from Western Governors University. Additionally, she holds certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse and is a member of AANAC, ARN – National and Idaho chapters, ANA- National and Idaho chapters, ACHE, and Nurse Leaders of Idaho (an AONE affiliate).
Director of Therapy Operations
Laura obtained a master's degree in speech language pathology from Plattsburgh State University. She began her career at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in 2006, treating patients with neurogenic speech, swallowing and cognitive disorders in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation. She worked collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team that completed two successful CARF surveys achieving accreditations for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord and comprehensive integrated inpatient rehabilitation. Laura is a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and Idaho State Speech Language and Hearing Association.
Director of Plant Operations
Eric Sutton has been in the healthcare industry for 10 years with the last five years being in plant operations management and has been involved in many successful Joint Commission surveys. Prior to the healthcare industry, Eric spent 20 years in the construction management then moved to Boise and joined the Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital team as the facilities management director. His responsibilities include EVS, plant operations, safety and security.
Director of Pharmacy
Rob joined the Encompass Health team in June 2019. He graduated from Roseman University of Health Sciences in South Jordan, Utah with his doctorate in pharmacy. Prior to moving to Boise, he worked as lead clinical pharmacist at Jordan Valley Medical Center in West Jordan, Utah. Rob has worked in various roles including intensive care, acute care, telemetry, emergency room and rehabilitation. His passion is working with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize patient outcomes and make a positive impact on those around him.
