45-year-old stroke survivor shares importance of rehabilitation

In February of this year, 45-year-old Ryan Wheeler suffered a brain stem stroke. When Ryan came to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Huntington in mid-February, he needed assistance to carry out bathing and dressing tasks and was only able to take a few steps. Encompass Health speech therapist Kristin Norris and stroke survivor Ryan share more about his experience in an interview with WSAZ.

Ryan Wheeler never imagined that he would have a stroke while playing X-box. He came to Encompass Health Huntington with goals to walk, eat and regain his independence—all goals he achieved by the time of his discharge on March 6. Mr. Wheeler has volunteered to come back and be an inspiration to other young stroke survivors to give them hope for their own recovery.

Hospital Happenings

Every year, different departments in our hospital design and donate a Christmas tree or other holiday item to raffle off. A big thank you also goes out to Stonerise Home Health, St. Mary’s Home Health and HIMG for partnering with us by donating a tree or other holiday item. We raised $830 that will be split between The Salvation Army and the AHA/ASA!
