Oct. 22, 2022 - In alignment with World Stroke Day, Dr. Tyler Richardson, attending physician of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Encompass Health Lakeshore in Birmingham, shares about the signs and symptoms of a stroke during an in-studio interview with Talk of the Town Alabama. “A stroke happens every 30 seconds in this country. It’s the number 1 cause of preventable disability in the United States,” says Dr. Richardson. ““The majority of strokes are survived, even though it’s a leading cause of death. The things we can do to prevent strokes are often behavioral - 80 percent of strokes are preventable. If you see a stroke happening, it’s important to act immediately.”
Dr. Richardson shares that remembering the acronym F.AS.T. can help quickly and effectively address the signs of a stroke. "On average, about every minute the brain tissue goes without blood flow or oxygen, about two million brain cells die," he says.
