Sept. 25, 2025 - Encompass Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Elissa “Lisa” Charbonneau has been named among Women We Admire’s Top 50 Women Chief Medical Officers of 2025. The list honors women whose leadership reflects the critical link between medical expertise and executive decision-making that defines modern health care, shaping how their organizations respond to new medical challenges and opportunities.
Dr. Charbonneau has served as chief medical officer of Encompass Health since June 2015. In this role, she oversees medical operations, quality and patient care for all Encompass Health hospitals across the country. Prior to her current role, she served as Encompass Health’s vice president of medical services. She previously served as medical director at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, a joint venture of Maine Medical Center and Encompass Health, where she had been a staff physician since 1992.
Dr. Charbonneau received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the New York Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in natural sciences and epidemiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. She completed her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Temple/Moss Rehabilitation in Philadelphia, where she was chief resident in her final year. She is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Osteopathic Board of Rehabilitation Medicine.
An active thought leader, Dr. Charbonneau has presented on topics such as clinical leadership, post-acute care, patient-centered data models, opioid reduction, and post-COVID care. She has been recognized as one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives.
