At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in San Juan, we are a leading provider of inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology for stroke, brain injury, hip fracture, amputation and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

Area Chief Executive Officer
Daniel has served as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan, formerly HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan since 2007. He served as president and CEO of Casa Primavera Inc. and held various management positions at Pavia Health Inc., including service as an associate administrator and interim administrator for hospital operations at the Pavia Hato Rey Hospital, an acute hospital with 160 beds. He was also assistant general manager of San Jorge Children Hospital, a 125 bed hospital. He earned a master's degree in health services administration from the University of Puerto Rico’s School of Public Health.
Dr. Edwardo Ramos completed his doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Puerto Rico in 1989. He completed his residency in 1993 at the University of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program in Puerto Rico. He majored in pediatric rehabilitation and a research specialty at the University of Michigan in 1995. He has been a part of the faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 1995. He is associate clinical professor at the UPR School of Medicine. He holds physical medicine and rehabilitation certifications and is certified in spinal cord medicine and pain management He has been the medical director of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, formerly HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital since 2004.
Edwardo Ramos, M.D. is an independent private practice physician whose office is located at the hospital.
Business Development Director
Milagros Burgos has more than 15 years in the clinical area of therapy. She was a member of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan, formerly HealthSouth's Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan first team back in 1999 as a marketing representative and then moved up the corporate ladder to become marketing director. She was also part of the team that started the operations of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Manatí in 2007. Milagros has an associate degree in physical therapy from the University of Puerto Rico and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Interamerican University from Puerto Rico.
Jesús has more than 20 years of experience working for the hospital industry in the areas of finance and accounting. He has worked for various industry sectors, such as; acute care hospitals and nonprofit organizations. He has also provided management consulting, accounting and contributions to other industries, such as mortgage banking, restaurants, laboratories and durable medical equipment companies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting, from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico. He is also an active member and 2016-2017 President of the Board of the Hospital Financial Management Association (HFMA), Chapter in Puerto Rico.
Director of Case Management
Sandra has served as case management director at our hospital since August 2015. She completed a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao in 2009. In 2011, she completed a master's degree in social work at the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras. She has several years of experience in acute hospitals.
Human Resources Director
Ailenid has more than 10 years of experience in the field of human resources in the health care industry and assisted care centers for the elderly. She also has experience as a consultant in organizational development and strategic education planning for health professionals, aligned to bring a culture and achieve effective and consistent patient and employee engagement. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she has a bachelor's degree in business administration, with a concentration in human resources and is an active member of the SHRM-PR and national chapter.
Director of Quality and Risk
Public Health, Quality and Risk Management Expert. Trained in the field of medicine, public health, and epidemiology. Leader in clinical quality and risk Management. Vast experience in clinical protocol writing, in the implementation of quality and risk management prevention tools, including hospital run improvement projects.
Chief Nursing Officer
Rocío began her career in 2005 as a critical care nurse at Puerto Rico’s trauma hospital. In 2008 she completed her master's degree in nursing sciences with a minor in administrative role of adults and the elderly at the University of Puerto Rico, medical sciences campus. She developed as a supervisor in the psychiatric hospital and for 4 years she worked as a nursing professor in different universities. Since 2011 she has worked as a nursing director in acute hospitals. At the end of 2019, Rocío joined the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of San Juan team as a chief nursing officer.
Director of Therapy Operations
Rafael graduated from the University College of Mayagüez and has a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2003. In 2005, he further developed his knowledge and skills at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, where he received a master’s degree in physical therapy sciences. He started with the hospital as a physical therapy student in 2005 and has progressed through a multitude of positions including per diem physical therapist, full-time physical therapist, team leader in physical therapy, therapy manager then to his current role of director of therapy services. Motivated to achieve satisfaction in patients and help them achieve their rehabilitation goals for early integration into the community.
