At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Sunrise, we are a leading provider of inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.

Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.

Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

*The hospital provides access to independent physicians.

Our team works hard to get our patients back to the actives that are important to them. For Diana, that was walking her beloved dog. Thanks to Lauren, Diana got lots of practice during therapy and hopefully will be home soon walking her pup.

Our Brain Injury team leads Stacy Williams, IP manager, and Vicente Cavalida, senior physical therapist, presented articles of evidence-based research on how exercise positively effects cognition. Then they tested the research with hopspital staff. Participants got to see how an exercise program positively affected their own cognition after exercise.

After brain surgery to remove a level 1 meningioma, Pat came to Encompass Health to recover and regain her independence. After 25 days, she was discharged home with her family, which partnered with her team of therapists, nurses, doctors and case managers to make it a successful stay. Pat's daughter, Amy Evans, was by her mom’s side to see her transfer herself into the car, leaving the hospital able to care for herself once again! Way to go Pat!

Michael Roffelsen

Chief Executive Officer

Mike has more than 25 years of senior level management experience in healthcare operations and sales.

Mike was appointed CEO at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise in May 2017. He has more than 25 years of senior level management experience in healthcare operations and sales with numerous healthcare organizations. Mike received his Bachelor of Arts in communications from Concordia University, Mequon, Wisconsin, and his MSM in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Indiana.

Scott Tannenbaum
Scott Tannenbaum, MD, PM&R

Medical Director

Dr. Tannenbaum has served as the hospital’s medical director since 1995.

Dr. Tannenbaum has served as the hospital’s medical director since 1995. He maintains a private practice within the hospital and is an attending physician at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise. Dr. Tannenbaum received an undergraduate degree in biology from Brandeis University and graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Tannenbaum is an independent private practice physician.

Sean has more than 20 years of healthcare marketing and business development experience.

Sean joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise, formerly HealthSouth Sunrise Rehabilitation Hospital in November 2015. Sean brought with him more than 20 years of healthcare marketing and business development experience; 15 of which were in the Tri-County area. Sean received his education in business administration from Broward College.

Director of Case Management

Darryl has more than 30 years of experience in executive leadership.

Darryl joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise, formerly HealthSouth, in January 2018. He brings more than 30 years of experience in executive leadership roles in both inpatient acute and post-acute rehabilitation settings. He has worked in several Encompass Health rehabilitation hospitals and brings with him a variety of experience in the post-acute care continuum. Darryl obtained his education in psychology from the University of Tennessee at Martin. His diverse background includes hospital case management, utilization management, Six Sigma, quality management, disease management, managed care and discharge planning.

Susan has more than 35 years of nursing and healthcare experience.

Susan joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise, formerly HealthSouth, in August 2018. She brings more than 35 years of nursing and healthcare experience with 12 years specializing in quality and risk management in the acute care and long-term acute care settings. She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a master’s degree in nursing science and a minor in education in 2007. Her diverse background includes nursing, sales, and quality/risk.

Stacy is a Board-Certified Swallowing Specialist (BCS-S) and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS).

Stacy joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise, formerly HealthSouth, in September 2005. Stacy has more than 16 years of experience as a licensed speech language pathologist and more than 10 years of clinical leadership experience. Stacy is a graduate from the University of Central Florida, with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts d in communicative disorders. Stacy is a Board-Certified Swallowing Specialist (BCS-S) and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). She is a national educator on many clinical specialty topics. Additionally, Stacy has numerous clinical publications.

Prior to joining Encompass, Dennis was the regional director of facilities for a long term acute care company in the Miami area.
