Chief Executive Officer
Barbara was named chief executive officer of UVA Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, formerly UVA- HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital on Dec. 4, 2017. Prior to her role with UVA Encompass Health, she served as the administrative director of rehabilitation services for UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Altogether, she has more than 30 years of rehabilitation experience as an administrator and a physical therapist. Barbara earned a bachelor’s degree of physical therapy from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from University of Phoenix. Aside from being licensed as a physical therapist, she has certifications in lean six sigma and is an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Associate Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for University of Virginia Health System, Medical Director, UVA HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital
Dr. Alfano has been the Medical Director at UVA Encompass Health, formerly UVA-HealthSouth since the hospital opened in 1998. He has published scholarly articles in multiple peer reviewed medical journals, is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students and was honored to be ranked in the top 10 percent of all HealthSouth medical directors for patient satisfaction in 2011. He currently attends on the Orthopedic, General and Geriatric Rehabilitation services at UVA Encompass Health in addition to his role as Medical Director. Dr. Alfano graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Nassau County Medical Center in New York.

Associate Professor, University of Virginia Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Dr. Diamond earned his Medical Degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1986. He was appointed the Director of Neurorehabilitation and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins/Sinai Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Diamond also received certifications in Internal Medicine in 1989, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1993. His clinical and research interests are in Neurorehabilitation and Geriatric Rehabilitation.
Director Therapy Operations
Rob Dixon, DPT, began his career holding multiple roles in corporate marketing and finance prior to joining UVA Encompass Health, formerly UVA/HealthSouth as a physical therapist. He gained more than 10 years’ clinical experience with a focus on neuro rehabilitation and the related technologies before moving into the role as director of therapy. Rob holds clinical certifications including neuro-rehabilitation, wound care and lymphedema, and has contributed to the development of the wound care and lymphedema programs for UVA/HealthSouth along with the national training program for the partial weight bearing treadmill trainer, the AutoAmbulater. Rob is an adjunct faculty member with the physical therapy department at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University. Rob earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and a master’s degree in business administration from Radford University as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dianna has 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry and has worked an additional 15 years in the banking, leasing and public accounting industries. In her role prior to joining UVA Encompass Health, formerly UVA-HealthSouth as controller of a mobile imaging company, she supported a 400 percent growth in revenue. She received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland and is a certified public accountant.
Director of Human Resources
Tonya joined UVA Encompass Health, formerly UVA-HealthSouth in 2007. Her career expands 18 years of experience in the field of Human Resources, with seven years in the healthcare industry. Tonya’s passion for resolving employee relations issues makes it evident that preserving the company’s most valuable asset, the employees, and salvaging relationships is critical to the hospitals overall goals and objectives. She graduated from Strayer University of Manassas, Virginia with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in 2006 and a Master’s Degree of Health Services Administration in 2009.
Assistant Professor, University of Virginia Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Dr. Regan Royer joined UVA Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, formerly UVA-HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in July 2016. She currently attends on the general rehabilitation service, caring for patients’ impairments primarily related to cancer, cardiac, pulmonary and general orthopedic conditions. She graduated from University of Virginia Medical School as well as completed her residency training at UVA. Prior to her medical training, she received her master’s degree in public health from The George Washington University and spent several years at The National Cancer Institute conducting and publishing research related to cancer survivorship concerns.

Assistant Professor, University of Virginia Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Dr. Smith began his career at the University of Virginia in the Summer of 2011. He earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and attended Medical School at Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his preliminary medicine internship and rehabilitation residency at Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota. Realizing a passion for serving people with life-changing disabilities, Dr. Smith elected to do a fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. During that fellowship he divided his training time among MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland’s Level-1 Trauma Center and Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems Center, Cleveland Clinic, and Cleveland’s Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
Director of Quality Improvement/Risk Management
Michael joined UVA Encompass Health, formerly UVA-HealthSouth in 1998 as the senior OT on the spinal cord/orthopedic injuries team and lead therapist for the seating clinic. In 2008, he transitioned to the role of Director of Quality and Risk Management where he is responsible for maintaining the hospital’s readiness for accreditation surveys, facilitating performance improvement, addressing complaints and managing the physician credentialing process.
