New hospital coming to Bangor - WABI 5
June 23, 2026 — Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Bangor plans to open to patients in early October. The hospital will bring much needed specialized inpatient rehabilitation care to Bangor and its surrounding communities.
The new hospital addresses a critical gap in Maine’s healthcare system, where access to inpatient rehabilitation services has been historically limited. Encompass Health Bangor CEO Troy Trejo spoke with WABI 5 about the hospital.
“We have such a tremendous network of acute hospitals, home health, nursing facilities in our state,” Trejo said. “However, we do not have the amount of specialized inpatient rehab care that we will provide.”
The Bangor hospital will be the Company’s second hospital in Maine. Its first hospital in Portland, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, has been serving patients for more than 30 years.
The need for additional, local inpatient rehabilitation care is significant. Maine has one of the oldest populations in the country but ranks among the lowest in inpatient rehabilitation beds per capita.
“Maine has among the lowest number of inpatient rehab beds per capita in the country, despite having one of the oldest populations,” Trejo said. “That gap highlights the importance of expanding access to these services close to home.”
Beyond improving patient access to care, the hospital is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region. Encompass Health Bangor plans to hire more than 170 employees across clinical and support roles.
Encompass Health Bangor will provide essential rehabilitation services that help patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions regain functional ability, independence and quality of life. Patients receive a minimum of three hours of intensive physical, occupational and/or speech therapy five days each week, as well as frequent physician visits and 24-hour nursing care.
