Jan. 21, 2026 – Cathy Butenewicz has been appointed CEO of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of York. The 71-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital is located at 1850 Normandie Drive in York, Pennsylvania. Butenewicz, who previously served as the hospital’s associate administrator and later as interim CEO, will oversee all hospital operations.
“It’s been an honor to serve this hospital the past year,” Butenewicz said. “I look forward to continuing the excellent care we provide our patients and leading our team to provide high-quality rehabilitation services that make a lasting impact.”
Butenewicz brings more than 30 years of nursing expertise, with 15 of those years in various leadership roles. In her time at Encompass Health York, she had oversight of the quality department, dietitian team and food and nutrition services. Butenewicz also led the reaccreditation of the hospital’s stroke, brain injury, advanced inpatient diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and wound care programs through The Joint Commission. Prior to joining Encompass Health York, Butenewicz served as chief nursing officer at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health. In this capacity, she had direct clinical, administrative and financial oversight of the nursing division. She also succeeded in improving patient satisfaction and reducing acute care transfers and patient fall rates.
“Cathy has demonstrated success in hospital operations, patient care and improving patient outcomes,” said Mat Gooch, president of Encompass Health’s Northeast region. “She is skilled in leading multidisciplinary teams, creating a culture of innovation and collaboration and driving growth. She is the right person to lead Encompass Health York.”
Butenewicz holds a doctorate in nursing from Capella University and a master’s degree in nursing from Wilmington University. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse. Butenewicz is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the American Nurses Association and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
Encompass Health York opened to patients in 1993. The hospital recently completed a three-year renovation project, including converting all patient rooms to private rooms and updating the dialysis suite and both therapy gyms to feature new technologies.
