At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Pelham and serving the greater Birmingham area, we are an inpatient rehabilitation hospital that provides inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology for stroke and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.
Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

CEO
Medical Director
Dr. Taylor serves as medical director for Encompass Health Shelby County, which opened on April 11, 2018. He was born in Dothan, Alabama, graduated from Dothan High School, and received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University as well as his Doctorate degree from Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons in New York. He completed his internship and first year of residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in internal medicine. Following a two-year stent in the Air Force, he completed his residency as well as a fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Dr. Taylor is Board Certified in cardiovascular disease as well as internal medicine and holds memberships with the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He spent over 21 years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in the department of medicine, division of cardiology as an instructor, assistant professor and professor. After leaving UAB in 2013, he joined the Alabama Cardiovascular Group now located at the Grandview Hospital Complex. In addition to working with the Alabama Cardiovascular Group, in 2018 he began completing consultative work at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Lakeshore and now Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County.
Dr. Taylor is an independent private practice physician.
Area Business Development Director
Rebecca joined Encompass Health in 2016 as a rehabilitation liaison at Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital prior to being named business development director at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County in 2019. Rebecca is a registered nurse and brings with her more than 25 years of leadership and clinical experience. Prior to joining Encompass Health, she was area vice president for Amedisys and was responsible for seven locations in Alabama. Rebecca received her nursing degree from the University of West Alabama and has held her RN license since 1995.

Maura joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County in 2020. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Alabama. She has more than 15 years of human resources experience in the health care environment. Maura currently holds her professional human resources (PHR) and SHRM-CP (Society of Human Resources- Certified Professional) certification.

Danny began his career in residential maintenance and facilities in 1990. In 2009, Danny joined Encompass Health as a maintenance mechanic at the Rehab Institute of St. Louis. Danny served as a maintenance supervisor prior to his transition to the Shelby County location in 2020.
