At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Abilene, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Located in Abilene, we serve the Texas Midwest as a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, hip fracture, cardiac conditions and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits.
Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

Chief Executive Officer
An accomplished healthcare professional with more than 24 years of experience in the industry, Joe has served as the chief executive officer for more than six years. With experiences as a marketing director and a respiratory therapist, Joe brings a variety of knowledge encompassing all aspects of patient care, business development and operations. Joe’s sharp focus on patient satisfaction and quality outcomes greatly impact the post-acute care environment of Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth in the Abilene market. Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in applied studies from Abilene Christian University.
Monica H. Wichner, D.O. is a board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist. She earned her medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic medicine. She completed her residency at Rush St. Luke’s Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago.

Chief Nursing Officer
Miles earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Central Philippine University and has worked in various nursing disciplines in Texas and New Hampshire. A registered nurse for more than 28 years, Miles has held staff and management positions in critical care, oncology, hospice, medical-surgical units and employee health. He has successfully served as the chief nursing officer since 2010. He received his Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN®) designation in 2016.
Human Resources Director
Allison has worked in human resources with Encompass Health Abilene since February of 2017. Allison earned her BBA from Abilene Christian University and is currently pursuing an MBA from the University of Texas at Tyler. Allison is committed to excellent customer service and serving others in the community.
Director of Plant Operations
Robert brings more than 25 years of professional experience ranging from acute and long-term care facilities to operating as a master inspector for Lockheed Martin for many years. Proficient in both local and state agency guidelines, Robert has played a major role in leading companies to successful Joint Commission accreditations. Robert has been a resident in the Abilene area for more than 42 years and has made numerous contributions throughout the community.
Richard McGirr joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Abilene as the hospital’s first full-time controller. He brings nearly three decades of healthcare financial management experience focusing on budgeting, income and expense analysis, cost center management, revenue maximization and strategic planning. A believer in open and transparent communications among employees, Rich has created environments building bridges of trust that have increased revenues, contained costs and produced efficiencies. Outside of work, Rich stays busy spending time with his wife of 25+ years, their two dogs and golf. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the George Washington University and is formerly a resident of Connecticut.
Director of Case Management
Porsche is a registered nurse and board-certified case manager with 24 years of experience. She has worked in the primary, acute, and post-acute care areas, as well as in both home health and outpatient disease management. She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in nursing administration. Porsche and the case management team focus on meeting the ongoing healthcare needs of the patient and their families from admission to discharge and beyond, to ensure a continuum of quality care and improved patient outcomes.
Director of Therapy Operations
Luke began his role as the director of therapy operation in January of 2017. Luke earned his doctorate degree in physical therapy from Hardin-Simmons University, as well as his bachelor's degree in biology. Luke has a wide array of physical therapy experience in settings such as inpatient rehabilitation, home health, and long term care. Luke strives to promote a therapy community that utilizes quality care and evidenced-based techniques to improve patient outcomes.
Business Development Director
Shelby began her career with Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, formerly HealthSouth, in 2016 as a marketing liaison in Midland, Texas. She was quickly promoted to senior liaison in Midland and later to business development director in Abilene. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and has fifteen years of marketing experience in healthcare including pharmaceutical sales, home health and hospice. She has a true passion for sales and marketing as well as helping the community.
Director of Quality
Daniel is a fellowship trained healthcare executive that specializes in process improvement and strategy in post-acute care hospitals. Daniel holds a master’s degree in healthcare management from the University of Texas at Dallas. Daniel is green belt certified in lean six sigma and he is also a certified baldrige examiner.
