At Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, we are committed to helping you regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury. Serving the city of Woburn and the greater Boston area, we are a leading provider of inpatient rehabilitation for stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions. We also have inpatient rehabilitation locations in Beverly and Lowell.

Using clinical collaboration and advanced technologies, we provide a personalized care plan designed to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals.

Our inpatient rehabilitation hospital uses an interdisciplinary team approach that includes physical, speech and occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dietitians and more, combined with our advanced technology and expertise, to help you achieve your goals. You will receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week while under the constant care of registered nurses, many of whom specialize in rehabilitation, and frequent independent private practice physician* visits. Our hospital also offers outpatient therapy services.

Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies, as needed.

  • Kitchen has small table and chairs, standard kitchen appliances and sink and living room with couches and coffee table..
  • Grocery store has shelves and food items with a freezer area.
  • Bathroom has a shower, sink, and toilet.

David Coggins
David Coggins, MS, PT

Chief Executive Officer

David has more than 32 years of health care expertise, of which ten years have been at the senior management level.

David brings more than 32 years of health care expertise to Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, of which ten years have been at the senior management level. He received his undergraduate degree in education from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Boston University. David became the CEO at HealthSouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital in December 2017, after serving as the director of marketing operations.

Daniel Lyon
Daniel Lyons, M.D.

Medical Director

Dr. Lyons has been the medical director for more than 10 years.

Dr. Lyons has been a medical director for Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly HealthSouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital, for more than 10 years. A graduate of Clark University, he completed his medical studies at Tufts Medical School. Dr. Lyons completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey. He is board-certified in rehabilitation medicine, as well as spinal cord injury medicine.

The hospital provides access to independent physicians.

Nerline Destin, LCSW

Director of Case Management

Nerline Destin joined the leadership team in October 2017.
Nerline Destin joined the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly, HealthSouth, leadership team in October 2017. She graduated from Regis College in Weston MA with a degree in political science. Additionally, Nerline obtained a Master of Social Work from Simmons College in Boston MA. She began her career in social work at the Boston Emergency Team (Baycove), Walker Home and School and eventually transitioned to case management at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. She recently worked at CuraHealth in Boston as the director of case management. Nerline is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 8 years of experience in case management.

Teresa Hayes
Teresa Hayes, MSW, LICSW

Business Development Director

Teresa has more than 15 years of experience in post-acute healthcare and  leads a team that assists community members in accessing the acute rehabilitative level of care.

Teresa became the business development director at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly HealthSouth, in January 2018, after spending two and half years providing clinical consulting to acute rehabilitation hospitals across the country. With more than 15 years of experience in post-acute healthcare, Teresa leads a team that assists community members in accessing the acute rehabilitative level of care. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of South Alabama and a master’s degree in social work from Boston College. Teresa is the immediate past-president of the board of directors for the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts and is still an active board member.

Lauren Healey, MBA

Human Resources Director

Lauren joined the Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, leadership team in August of 2015.

Lauren joined the Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, leadership team in August of 2015. She graduated from Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass. in 2009 with a degree in psychology. Lauren began her human resources career working in manufacturing for Pierce Aluminum before transitioning to health care. She obtained her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management in 2015.

Kevin Piendak
Kevin Piendak, EMBA, OTR/L

Director of Quality and Risk Management

Kevin brings more than 20 years of inpatient rehabilitation experience to his role of director of quality and risk management.

Kevin brings more than 20 years of inpatient rehabilitation experience to his role of director of quality and risk management at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly HealthSouth. After graduating from Quinnipiac University with a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy, he began his career as a therapist and developed a wide range of clinical skills with multiple diagnostic populations. Since earning an executive master’s degree in business administration in 2002, Kevin has held a number of leadership positions within the inpatient rehabilitation setting. He has also served on the executive board for the Massachusetts Association for Occupational Therapists and remains active in initiatives that relate to the advancement of occupational therapy services within the state.

Thomas Plante, PT

Director of Therapy Operations

Tom has experience in multiple settings of physical therapy, including acute rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, home care and school based.

Tom is a graduate of Northeastern University, and has been practicing in the field of physical therapy for more than 16 years. He is experienced in multiple settings of physical therapy, including acute rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, home care and school based. His treatment areas focus on spinal cord injury, stroke, spasticity and wheelchair seating. Tom started with Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly HealthSouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital, in December 2007, and became the director of therapy operations in December 2015.

Barbara Polizzotti

Controller

Barbara joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England in April 2019, with more than 20 years of demonstrated success in healthcare financial operations.

Barbara joined Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England in April 2019, with more than 20 years of demonstrated success in healthcare financial operations. Prior to joining Encompass Health New England, she served in various senior leadership roles at several Massachusetts and New Hampshire acute care hospitals, as well as healthcare financial consulting roles with Partners Healthcare. Barbara received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Southern NH University.

Deborah Rich, BSN, RN, CCM

Chief Nursing Officer

Deb brings more than 20 years of extensive nursing and case management experience to her role of chief nursing officer.

Deb brings more than 20 years of extensive nursing and case management experience to her role of chief nursing officer at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of New England, formerly HealthSouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital. She began her career as a certified nursing assistant and then attended nursing school to become a rehabilitation nurse at Youville Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. While at Youville Hospital, she spent many years as a liaison before advancing to the director of admissions. Deb joined the case management team at Encompass Health New England in 2007 as the director of case management, and in September 2017, Deb transitioned to her current role of chief nursing officer.
